My Emails This Week At A Glance

Hei Man sparked off an interesting thought in my today: What if I plot all my emails into a graph? How much email do I get, and where are they coming from? So with Excel 2010 and a whole bunch of Gmail search syntaxes (I couldn’t find any applications to do the statistics automatically), I’ve generated some statistics and plotted some graphs for all my emails from last Friday to yesterday. That’s 7 days of my emails!

Note that numbers are based on number of conversations, not the exact number of emails.

A sneak peak at Gear65 #9

I actually managed to finish editting Episode 9 of Gear65 already, but since there’s still three more days before it’s up (Gear65 is usually up every Thursday, though last week I was late by a day…), I decided to give you guys a sneak peak of the episode by showing you a video clip we filmed during our recording.

Be sure to check out Gear65 this Thursday!

Unboxing an iPod (HD Video from Samsung WB500)

Another HD video! Just got the Samsung WB500 for review at Tech65, so I decided to do a test HD video with it. So far, the camera has proven itself to be very powerful, more than I actually know how to take advantage of! Will be testing it out for the next two weeks, so email me at daniel at tech65 dot org if you want me to find out something regarding the camera.

Watch out for it to appear on Gear65!

A cool gift for our 100th episode of 65bits

Card from Hei Man

Got this really awesome card from Hei Man today at Tech65‘s 100th episode event at Geek Terminal. She actually made it all by herself! According to her, she learnt how to do from this website. Thanks Hei Man, I really liked it.

I had an awesome time yesterday at our event and everything went better than I expected it to be (apart from the small technical hiccup at the start of the recording).

That wasn’t the only gift I got today though…

Unpacking the rig from Intel

So Intel sent me their Core i7 rig to play with, and I decided to share with you guys my unpacking experience!

The specs for the rig:

  • Intel Core i7 Extreme 3.2GHz (4 cores, 8 threads)
  • Windows Vista Ultimate
  • 3 GB RAM
  • ATI Radeon HD 4800 with 512MB
  • 80GB Hard drive Solid State Drive!!!
  • Samsung 22″ display
  • Microsoft Wireless desktop

UPDATE: Just found out that it’s not using a 80GB HDD but an 80GB Intel SSD!!!

I underestimated the rig they sent me

I know Intel said they’ll send me a machine, but I wasn’t expecting this…

I mean, look at the size of that box! And a 22″ Wide Screen display?? Woah… My desk is once again full of gear

Anyway, Intel sent me this gear for me to test out the new Intel Core i7 chip, and I will be using it to render videos with Adobe CS4 to really put this machine to the test, which, frankly, I have no doubt it will perform. Stay tuned for more on Tech65.org!

In the meantime, I’m gonna crash in bed before Interesthink3 tonight, and after 5 days of awesome serving at the I Dare You and Encounter Jesus camp for DARE.

HD horrors with Final Cut Express

Ok, I’m totally on a roll now. Getting quite annoyed (thank God not agitated or pissed, just annoyed…) after discovering a big truth regarding HD video and Final Cut Express.

So as most of you know, I bought a new HD camera to film videos for Tech65. Today, I decided to give a hand at editting my first HD (720p) movie, so I imported the files from the camera into a folder on my iMac before importing it into a new Final Cut Express project after discovering before hand that “Log and Transfer” (quicktime link) doesn’t work with this camera. I was happy that I could just edit as usual with the HD files in the project, before discovering the following:

It looks quite normal doesn’t it? Just to explain what you’re looking at, the left window is the clip I would like to add into my sequence, while the right window is a preview of my sequence now. I edit by setting a start point and an end point (called in and out points) in the left window and drag it into the right so that it drops into my sequence.

The Tech65 Sandbox has changed again

Tech65 version 3bI took a day off today from work, so I decided to finally get down and redesign Tech65.org one more time. There were problems in the previous design in our sandbox (that’s what we call the place where we play with code without affecting the actual site) that could only be fixed by completely redesigning the site. Anyway, I felt the fonts were too big.

So back to the drawing boards it was. It wasn’t so difficult this time since I already had an existing theme in mind as well as the raw photoshop file to make changes easily. Also, to save me from all that mess that was going on in the code, I decided to do this from scratch (kind of. All my designs are based on the Kubrick theme’s code) rather than editing previous versions. It was surprisingly faster than the last time I did something like this. The coding part was a lot easier too, since I was doing this from scratch. I’m quite happy with what I’ve done.

As usual, you can check it out over at our sandbox. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! :)

Oh, and as a special treat, here’s a look at the history (just 1 year) of Tech65 design changing with the times.
